{"id":8239,"date":"2024-03-29T09:22:54","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T08:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/?p=8239"},"modified":"2024-03-29T09:53:18","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T08:53:18","slug":"results-of-the-nudge-project-in-latina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/en\/results-of-the-nudge-project-in-latina\/","title":{"rendered":"Results of the nudge project in Latina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2023, we were pioneers of a true example of \u201c<strong>nudge<\/strong>\u201d project, applied to the world of waste, and the results were extremely interesting.<br \/>\nThe initiative, carried out in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/universitaditrento\/\"><strong>University of Trento<\/strong><\/a>, involved the <strong>Municipality of Latina<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abclatina.it\/progetti\/\"><strong>ABC Latina<\/strong><\/a>, the local waste collection utility.<br \/>\nThe goal of the project was to <strong>improve the separate waste collection<\/strong> carried out by citizens, and help them build virtuous habits.<br \/>\nOur approach is called \u201cnudge theory\u201d, in other words a kind push.<br \/>\nThe idea is to drive people to perform positive behaviors, without any obligation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical notes<br \/>\n<\/strong>We made a few technical choices in order to obtain analytical data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Product analyses before and after the project implementation<\/li>\n<li>Selection of two similar city districts: a pilot area and a test area<\/li>\n<li>Digitisation of the collected data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> step<br \/>\n<\/strong>In the first step we carried out an analysis of citizens\u2019 needs, using a survey conducted within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/showcase\/junkerapp\/\"><strong>Junker\u2019s app<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal of this survey \u2013 these are the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/federicastablum\/\"><strong>Federica Stablum<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 is to <em>shift our focus back to citizens and their needs<\/em>. Products and services are often created without referring to those who will actually use them every day. We believe it is important to understand <strong>what drives people to do separate collection<\/strong>, and to figure out what we are doing well and what we can still improve\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The survey contained several questions, and to \u201c<strong>What would you consider useful to improve your separate waste collection?<\/strong>\u201d the <strong>30%<\/strong> of participants answered that \u201c<strong>Having feedback about how I recycle<\/strong>\u201d would be a useful strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> step<br \/>\n<\/strong>In order to try and meet the request for feedback on separate waste collection, the project included \u201c<strong>smileys<\/strong>\u201d: these coloured stickers provided feedback on how users recycle.<br \/>\nThen, using the QR code, users could receive the relevant explanation: each message took users to a specific page to specifically support them through the changes to be implemented.<br \/>\nBesides, this allowed us to verify how citizens actually used the system we created.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3<sup>rd<\/sup> step<br \/>\n<\/strong>ABC Latina staff played an extremely important role. Their tasks were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checking the contents of <a href=\"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/en\/products\/containers-door-to-door\/\"><strong>containers<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applying the <strong>sticker<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Reading the RFID TAGs, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/en\/products\/rfid-readers-gps-detection\/\"><strong>ArcoBEAT<\/strong> <\/a>portable reader<\/li>\n<li>Recording, on ArcoBEAT, the type of applied sticker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These steps were necessary to create an information database, and subsequently assess the effects of the process seen on the basis of the changes of users.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<br \/>\n<\/strong>The project was developed over a period of about six months, in which we carried out product analyses, staff preparation and field monitoring for a total <strong>43 days of information checks<\/strong> and <strong>2,607 data records<\/strong>.<br \/>\nData processing has allowed us to bring out those several users who corrected their mistakes, autonomously and with satisfaction.<br \/>\nWith the <strong>1,302<\/strong> applied smiles, the territory of Latina and the districts covered by the case study consolidated the data of separate collection with<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>an increase in the amount of the organic fraction<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>a reduction in the amount of plastic and metal packaging within the residual waste fraction<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a further result, we helped citizens understand the residual waste container is to be taken out only when full; users were extremely proactive, thus allowing ABC Latina <strong>to reduce collection on the territory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Concrete results, obtained with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>Get in touch for the smileys<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2023, we were pioneers of a true example of \u201cnudge\u201d project, applied to the world of waste, and the results were extremely interesting.
