Martina Dei Cas<\/span><\/a> is responsible for Communication and Promotion<\/strong> at Trentino Sviluppo<\/strong>, and we at Sartori Ambiente<\/strong> had the pleasure of meeting her during the ergonomics certification process<\/strong> for our new container \u2013 UrbaE<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Martina, fir<\/span>st of all, thank you for your time! We would love to hear a bit more about you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I grew up in Ala<\/strong>, the \u201cVelvet City,\u201d in Vallagarina<\/strong>, where I still live today. In 2015, I earned a degree in European and Transnational Law<\/strong> from the University of Trento<\/strong>, writing my thesis on comparative criminal law<\/strong> regarding gender violence legislation<\/strong> between Italy and Latin America. The following year, I completed a master\u2019s degree in \u201cWomen\u2019s Leadership\u201d<\/strong> at SDA Bocconi \u2013 School of Management<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I am a journalist<\/strong> and work in media relations<\/strong> for Trentino Sviluppo<\/strong>, the provincial agency for business and territorial development in the Autonomous Province of Trento<\/strong>. In 2010, I was awarded the title of “Alfiere del Lavoro”<\/strong> (Champion of Work) by the then President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano<\/strong>. Receiving this honor from his hands at the Quirinale<\/strong> remains one of the greatest emotions<\/strong> of my life and that of my parents, who sacrificed a lot to provide me with as many educational, cultural, and personal growth opportunities<\/strong> as possible.<\/p>\n

For nearly ten years<\/strong>, during my high school and university studies, I volunteered in after-school programs<\/strong> to support the integration of vulnerable children and teenagers<\/strong> in my hometown. This experience convinced me that education is the most valuable investment<\/strong> we can make as a society for our future. And when I talk about education<\/strong>, I don\u2019t just mean grammar and math\u2014although they are important\u2014but shaping individuals who are aware of their rights, duties, and self-worth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

With this conviction in mind, I traveled to Central America<\/strong>, where my international volunteering experiences<\/strong> inspired my novels:

\n\ud83d\udcd6 \u201cIl quaderno del destino\u201d (2015)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Thanks to reader support<\/strong>, I launched the project \u201cA Book for a Library\u201d<\/strong>, which provides educational materials<\/strong> to children and teenagers in rural Nicaragua<\/strong>, helping them continue their studies and fight for their dreams. This initiative was awarded<\/strong> in the first edition of the contest \u201cStrike \u2013 Stories of Young People Changing the World\u201d<\/strong> by the Autonomous Province of Trento.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udcfd\ufe0f From \u201cIl quaderno del destino\u201d<\/strong>, a short film<\/strong> of the same name was made in Central America<\/strong>, winning awards at:
\n\ud83c\udfc6 Premios Latino<\/strong> \u2013 the Latin American film festival in Marbella, Spain (2018)<\/strong>
\n\ud83c\udfc6 International Children\u2019s Film Festival<\/strong> \u2013 Guanajuato, Mexico (2019)<\/strong><\/p>\n

From a journalistic investigation in Guatemala<\/strong> in 2019, I wrote \u201cAngelitos\u201d<\/strong>, a book sponsored<\/strong> by the International Cooperation Center of Trento<\/strong> and Amnesty International Italy<\/strong>. It tells the true story of Angelito Escalante<\/strong>, a twelve-year-old kidnapped from school and murdered by a gang<\/strong> for refusing to join them.<\/p>\n

\n

Your articles, books, and projects tell stories of inclusivity, justice, and resilience, which have resonated deeply with us. If we could support one of your initiatives, which one would it be?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I would definitely be grateful if you could symbolically join me #onAJourneywithAngelito<\/strong>. As Angelito\u2019s father, Luis<\/strong>, told me, spreading his story means ensuring that this brave child<\/strong>, who sacrificed his life to resist gang violence<\/strong>, is not killed again<\/strong>\u2014not just by criminals or by a state that failed to bring justice<\/strong>, but also by oblivion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When I first started talking about gangs in Italy, hardly anyone<\/strong> was discussing the issue. Today, unfortunately, gangs<\/strong> have even reached local newspaper headlines<\/strong>. I believe it is our responsibility as adults<\/strong> not only to worry or criticize<\/strong> but to offer children and teenagers concrete alternatives<\/strong>. We must help them understand the consequences of joining a gang<\/strong> and instead encourage activities<\/strong> that nurture their talents.<\/p>\n

Another issue very close to my heart<\/strong> is the inclusion of people with disabilities<\/strong>. Many people fear being intrusive or saying the wrong thing<\/strong>, which perpetuates outdated stereotypes<\/strong> that could easily be dismantled. That\u2019s why I enjoy collecting, writing, and sharing stories<\/strong> that challenge victimizing narratives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For example, my colleagues at ProM Facility<\/strong> in Polo Meccatronica, Rovereto<\/strong>, use 3D printing<\/strong> to create:

\n\u267f Mobility aids for individuals with rare diseases<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

Our last question concerns the project that directly involved us.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At Sartori Ambiente<\/strong>, being part of the circular economy<\/strong>, we have developed a design thinking approach<\/strong>\u2014a people-centered model<\/strong> that integrates analytical and creative skills<\/strong>. By involving multiple stakeholders<\/strong>, we have worked to improve solutions<\/strong> for people\u2019s benefit.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udca1 Do you think this approach is essential for expanding networks and contributing to the UN’s 2030 Agenda goals?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Absolutely. We often hear about Agenda 2030, the United Nations, and the European Union<\/strong>, and while these initiatives seem important and necessary<\/strong>, they can also feel distant and complex<\/strong>. But that\u2019s not true<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I firmly believe that each of us can and should do \u201ceverything little we can\u201d<\/strong> to leave the world better than we found it<\/strong>. Policies risk becoming mere statements of intent<\/strong>, framed in prestigious offices, unless we bring them to life in our daily actions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\ud83c\udf31 Speaking of the environment<\/strong>, how often do we leave the office with the lights still on<\/strong>?
\nIt seems like a small thing<\/strong>, but sometimes doing our part is easier than we think<\/strong>. All it takes is a little effort<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Regarding your project<\/strong>, what I appreciated most about the design thinking process<\/strong> for your new door-to-door waste collection system<\/strong> is that you prioritized the well-being of sanitation workers<\/strong> when designing new containers.<\/p>\n

I believe true circular economy<\/strong> should leverage innovation and technology<\/strong> while always keeping one ultimate goal in mind<\/strong>:
\n\u2705 Improving people’s quality of life<\/strong>\u2014including waste collectors<\/strong>, who may not have a glamorous<\/strong> job, but whose work is essential<\/strong> for the well-being of society as a whole.<\/p>\n
