{"id":8730,"date":"2024-07-10T14:28:12","date_gmt":"2024-07-10T12:28:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/?post_type=referenze&#038;p=8730"},"modified":"2024-07-10T14:28:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T12:28:12","slug":"nudge-theory-applied-to-the-world-of-waste","status":"publish","type":"referenze","link":"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/en\/references\/nudge-theory-applied-to-the-world-of-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"Nudge theory applied to the world of waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Technical notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We made a few technical choices in order to obtain analytical data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Product analyses before and after the project implementation<\/li>\n<li>Selection of two similar city districts: a pilot area and a test area<\/li>\n<li>Digitisation of the collected data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The goal of the project was\u00a0<strong>to improve the separate\u00a0waste collection<\/strong>\u00a0carried out by citizens, and help them create virtuous habits.<br \/>\nThis approach is called \u201cNudge theory\u201d, or gentle push.<br \/>\nThe aim is to guide people towards positive behaviours without any obligation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong><br \/>\nIn the first step we carried out an analysis of citizens&#8217; needs, using a survey conducted within the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/showcase\/junkerapp\/\"><strong>Junker<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s app.<br \/>\nThe goal of this survey \u2013 these are the words of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/federicastablum\/\"><strong>Federica Stablum-<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>is to shift our focus back to citizens and their needs.<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 Products and services are often created without referring to those who will actually use them every day. We believe it is important to understand\u00a0<strong>what drives people to do separate collection<\/strong>, and to figure out what we are doing well and what we can still improve\u201d.<br \/>\nThe survey contained several questions, and to \u201c<strong>What would you consider useful to improve your separate waste collection?<\/strong>\u201d the <strong>30%<\/strong>\u00a0of participants answered \u201c<strong>Having feedback about how recycle<\/strong>\u201d would be a useful strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong><br \/>\nIn order to try and meet the request for a feedback on separate waste collection, the project included \u201c<strong>smileys<\/strong>\u201d: these coloured stickers provided feedback on how users recycle.<br \/>\nThe relevant explanation was provided through the QR code: each message was linked to a specific page that supported users in understanding the change to be made.<br \/>\nThis also allowed us to verify if citizens actually used the system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3<\/strong><br \/>\nABC Latina staff played an extremely important role. Their tasks were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Checking the contents of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/prodotti\/contenitori-porta-a-porta\/\">containers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applying the <a href=\"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/sorriso-per-ambiente\/\">sticker<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Reading the RFID TAGs, through the <a href=\"https:\/\/sartori-ambiente.com\/prodotti\/letture-contenitori\/\">ArcoBEAT<\/a> portable\u00a0reader<\/li>\n<li>Recording, on ArcoBEAT, the type of applied sticker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These steps were necessary to create an information database, and subsequently assess the effects of the process seen on the basis of the changes of users.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project was developed over a period of about six months, in which we carried out product analyses, staff preparation and field monitoring, for a total of\u00a0<strong>43 days of information checks<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>2,607 data records<\/strong>.<br \/>\nData processing has allowed us to bring out those several users who corrected their mistakes, autonomously and with satisfaction.<br \/>\nWith the <strong>1,302<\/strong> applied smiles, the territory of Latina and the districts covered by the case study consolidate the data of separate collection with<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>an <strong>increase\u00a0<\/strong>in the amount of the\u00a0<strong>organic fraction<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>a <strong>reduction\u00a0<\/strong>in the amount of\u00a0<strong>plastic and metal packaging<\/strong>within the residual waste fraction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a further result, we helped citizens understand that residual waste containers are to be taken out only when full; users were extremely proactive, thus allowing ABC Latina to\u00a0<strong>reduce collection<\/strong>\u00a0on the territory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concrete results obtained with a
