Innovation Stories | Horto: when even a composter tells the story of an idea’s evolution

Some objects may seem simple, yet over time they come to tell a story shaped by research, evolving needs and innovation. The home composter is one of them.

When Sartori Ambiente developed its first composters in the 1990s, the goal was clear: to provide households with a practical tool for turning organic waste into compost, managing it directly where it is generated. That principle has remained unchanged; what has evolved over the years are the materials, design and functionality. Today, with the Horto range, this evolution is reflected in tangible and verifiable features.

The composters are made from at least 95% recycled plastic certified under the Plastica Seconda Vita (PSV) scheme, which certifies the recycled material content used in their production. This is particularly relevant in relation to the Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM), which establish specific requirements for home composters intended for public procurement, including a minimum percentage of certified recycled material. The ventilated walls, open-bottom structure and solutions designed to make assembly and everyday use easier respond both to the practical needs of home composting and to the construction requirements set out by the CAM.

In 2022, a new chapter was added to this story: through integration with Junker, the composter became part of a digital system connecting citizens and local authorities. Through the app, users can access useful information and instructions, while participating municipalities can use dedicated tools to manage registrations and maintain their composter registry. The role of the composter remains the same, but it gains new possibilities: from a household tool, it also becomes an identifiable element within the organisation of the waste collection service.

From the first Horto composters to digital composting, the common thread has always remained the same: evolving a product through thoughtful design choices, certified materials and technologies capable of responding to the needs of local communities. Because innovation does not necessarily mean inventing something entirely new; it can also mean continuously improving what we already know.

Happy Anniversary, Sartori Ambiente!
