The Best Waste Is the One Not Produced

In 2023, the production of municipal waste in Italy increased compared to the previous year, reaching nearly 29.3 million tonnes.
At the European level, in 2021, total municipal waste generation in the EU27 amounted to approximately 235.4 million tonnes, marking an increase compared to 2020. On a per capita basis, this corresponds to an average of 530 kg per person.
Globally, over 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste were generated in 2023, equivalent to around 3,800 tonnes per minute.

These figures highlight the urgent need to implement effective strategies for sustainable waste management, promoting waste reduction, increased recycling, and the adoption of circular economy models at both national and global levels.

International Zero Waste Day, proclaimed by the United Nations, is an opportunity for reflection celebrated on March 30 to raise awareness among governments, businesses, and citizens about the importance of reducing waste production and promoting sustainable production and consumption models.

Only through the commitment of all can we turn the waste crisis into an opportunity for a more sustainable future.
