A new certification for our composter

Achieving the NF Environment 094 certification means subjecting the product to a rigorous verification process, based on environmental, performance and safety criteria defined by one of Europe’s most authoritative ecolabels for low environmental impact products.
The certification fits within the framework of European circular economy policies, in line with the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC and its updates (EU Directive 2018/851), which promote the prevention, reuse and recycling of organic waste, including through home composting.
To obtain the NF Environment label, composters must comply with strict requirements, including:

  • Minimum recycled material content, at least 60%
  • Absence of hazardous substances, such as heavy metals (e.g. cadmium, lead, mercury), in line with the REACH Regulation (EC 1907/2006)
  • Durability and mechanical resistance, to ensure a long product lifespan
  • Composting efficiency, supported by appropriate aeration systems and direct contact with the soil
  • End-of-life oriented design, to facilitate the recycling of the product itself

These requirements are complemented by the provisions of the Italian Minimum Environmental Criteria (CAM) for public procurement, which promote products with recycled content, high durability and verifiable environmental performance.

Horto composters: designed to meet high standards
The Horto line was developed precisely to meet these requirements, integrating circular economy principles from the very design stage.

  • High recycled material content
Horto composters are made from recycled plastic certified “Plastica Seconda Vita”, with a recycled content of up to 95%, well above the minimum required by NF certification.
  • Material safety
The materials used are free from hazardous substances and compliant with European regulations, ensuring safe use even in domestic environments and in direct contact with the soil.
  • Composting efficiency
The design ensures extensive direct contact with the soil, which is essential to support biological activity, along with a natural aeration system provided both by the open base structure and by ventilation holes on the side walls.
These features enable proper oxygenation of the organic mass, accelerating the decomposition process.
  • Stability and durability
Horto composters feature thick walls and a self-supporting structure, ensuring stability even in variable outdoor conditions, without the need for additional anchoring systems.
The long product lifespan contributes to reducing overall environmental impact.
  • Modularity and expandability
The HORTO DUO 600 and HORTO DUO 800 models are among the few solutions on the market that can be expanded over time, increasing capacity through extension kits without replacing the product.
A design choice that reduces waste and supports long-term use.

A recognition that reflects a journey
The NF Environment 094 certification represents an important milestone for us, but above all a confirmation of a design approach focused on quality and sustainability.
Horto composters are not just certified products: they are practical tools to promote the local management of organic waste, reduce waste generation and return value to materials, in line with circular economy principles.

A commitment that continues every day, through the design of increasingly efficient, responsible and community-oriented solutions.
