In 1996, Sartori Ambiente was founded.
A starting point that, thirty years later, represents much more than a date: it marks the beginning of a journey built around a simple yet ambitious idea — to contribute in a tangible way to the sustainable management of waste.
The first product developed and brought to market was a home composter.
A choice that, looking back today, may seem natural, but at the time was deeply innovative.
In the mid-1990s, separate waste collection was just beginning to take shape in Italy. The regulatory framework was still evolving — the Ronchi Decree (Legislative Decree 22/1997), which would mark a turning point in waste management, was yet to come — and the concept of the circular economy had not yet been formally defined.
In this context, the home composter represented a practical solution to one of the key challenges of the system: the management of organic waste.
A simple action, a shift in perspective
Home composting introduced a new element: the possibility for citizens to become active participants in waste management.
Food and green waste, once considered a problem to be disposed of, became a resource to be valued locally, transformed into compost useful for the soil.
A natural process that requires appropriate tools to be effective, controlled and accessible.
The first Sartori Ambiente composters were developed with this very objective: to provide a simple, robust and functional solution, capable of supporting households in a cultural shift even before an operational one.
The foundations of the circular economy
Looking back at that first product today, it is possible to recognise many of the principles that still guide the evolution of the sector:
- reducing the amount of waste to be managed
- treating organic waste as close as possible to the place of generation
- returning value to materials
- actively involving citizens and communities
Concepts that are now fully reflected in European policies — from the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC to its more recent updates — but which, even then, represented a clear vision of the future.
From the composter to advanced systems
That first composter marked the beginning of a growth path that has led Sartori Ambiente to develop increasingly advanced solutions: from separate collection systems to the design of ergonomic containers, from waste tracking to the digitalisation of services, and support for municipalities in their transition towards more efficient and sustainable management models.
An evolution that has never lost sight of its starting point: designing solutions that work in real-world contexts, in close connection with people.
An ongoing story
This is the first chapter of a story that has lasted thirty years.
Each month, we will share a significant step along this journey: products, design choices and key moments that have helped shape Sartori Ambiente’s identity.
Not to celebrate a result, but to share a process built on listening, innovation and change.
Happy anniversary, Sartori Ambiente.
