DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

The operator at the centre

UrbaE was conceived with a primary focus on the health and well-being of operators. Its design aims to reduce the biomechanical overload of the musculoskeletal system, a common risk associated with the use of non-ergonomic tools in the workplace.

Injuries and efficiency

Prolonged strain causes injuries and a drop in performance, with consequent impacts on collection efficiency.

Turnover

Neglecting staff well-being leads to high turnover, which affects both costs and efficiency.

REAL NEEDS, CONCRETE SOLUTIONS

Designed, tested, certified

The product stems from extensive research carried out directly in the field. The studies thoroughly analysed the daily needs and real challenges faced by operators, turning them into practical solutions applied to UrbaE.

Urbae Ricerca Sul Campo

Field research

The shapes of the container are the result of in-depth biomechanical studies conducted in laboratories, as well as on-site analysis of the movements performed by waste collection operators. The symmetrical structure is designed to ensure optimal ergonomics and easy use for both right- and left-handed operators.

Movimenti e sforzi muscolari analizzati e studiati in laboratorio

Movements and muscular efforts analysed and studied in the laboratory

The ergonomic components of UrbaE are the result of an in-depth analysis of operator movements and muscular efforts, conducted in collaboration with a specialized research centre.
This study guided the creation of a handle that represents not only the first and last point of contact during emptying operations but is also optimized to support ergonomic posture, ensure functionality, and provide a feeling of safety and solidity.

Certified product and design process

UrbaE successfully passed tests conducted by independent certification bodies, proving compliant with international standards on ergonomics and human-centred design.
It has achieved the prestigious 4-star Ergocert ergonomic product certification, as well as HCD (Human-Centred Design) process certification. The latter confirms that the design process implemented by Sartori Ambiente fully complies with the requirements of the harmonized ISO 9241 standard.

Don’t call it a bin

Innovative and ergonomic

UrbaE is an ergonomic container — meaning safety, health, and ease of use for all those who use it every day. From the first ideas to the finished product, every detail of UrbaE was designed by listening to real users, through practical testing, field observation, and continuous improvement.
A container designed with attention to real people’s needs is also more inclusive, safer, and easier to use day after day.

REDUCES injuries, INCREASES efficiency

Designed for ergonomics

Waste collection operators face intense physical strain daily, leading to fatigue and risk of work-related injuries — often accompanied by a sense of dehumanization that makes their work even harder.
UrbaE helps reduce biomechanical overload on the operator’s musculoskeletal system, eliminating the need to bend or twist the wrist unnaturally to grip the handle. The result is a significant improvement in ergonomics and comfort during use.

Soft shapes that allow the container to be brought closer to the body, reducing leverage and minimizing effort during handling operations.

Verticality and visibility

The varied ways in which citizens place containers can make emptying operations difficult for operators. The goal is to create a positioning standard that allows smoother work and reduced physical strain.
The reflectors on the handle help establish a positioning standard that encourages the raised-handle position. The handle reflector also increases visibility from a distance.

DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

Cutting-edge components

Each component of the product has been selected based on optimal functionality.

Reflectors integrated in the handle

UrbaE can integrate large reflectors positioned both front and rear on the handle, greatly improving container visibility.
By installing reflectors in an elevated area of the handle, operators are ensured better visual detection, especially in low-light conditions.

Vertical-assist pin technology

UrbaE’s patented pin integrates key ergonomic technology, optimizing the user and operator experience. The vertical-assist function keeps the handle upright after the user places the bin, so operators always find it in the most convenient position for gripping and handling during collection.
The pin is designed with a vertical stop that does not interfere with emptying operations.

Draining lid

UrbaE’s lid design features a draining structure that effectively prevents rainwater accumulation, helping keep the container more hygienic and protecting operators from splashes during emptying.

Rear handle

The container body is designed to allow RFID tags to be integrated in different ways: via visible tag-holders, hidden tag-holders, or built directly into the reflective catadioptric elements.

Reflectors integrated in the body

UrbaE is equipped with a large rear handle, designed to offer a secondary grip option useful when the container is particularly heavy.
This handle also allows the bin to be hung on the Totem structure.

RFID TAG integrated in the body

The body of UrbaE allows the integration of reflective side and front reflectors, designed to significantly improve container visibility.
This accessory enhances operator efficiency and road safety during placement.

Lower spherical grips

UrbaE features a wrap-around structure with continuous curvature that harmoniously connects its sections. This design ensures a safe and comfortable interaction for operators, allowing the container to be brought close to the body without risk of bumps or bruises.

Edge-free body

At the bottom of the container, two lateral spherical grips allow palm support and easy handling without the need for forced gripping.
Combined with the angular handle grips, this configuration was specifically designed to let operators keep the container close to their body, reducing leverage and minimizing effort during handling.

Recognition and individual responsibility

Room for personalization

Identifying one’s own container becomes easy and immediate, increasing personal and collective responsibility in proper waste management.
Moreover, to encourage correct use and maintain the handle in an upright position, the UrbaE model incorporates a sophisticated nudging strategy inspired by the principles of perception psychology. This approach intuitively and non-coercively guides user behaviour, making the desired handle position feel natural and immediate.
